The Emily Giffin Series: A Review

I recently read Emily Giffin's three book series: Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and Baby Proof off my summer reading list. I thought I would share my thoughts on the series.

Something Borrowed

Imagine falling in love with your best friend's fiance. That's exactly the situation that Rachel finds herself in when she starts having an affair with her best friend Darcy's fiance Dex. Now Rachel must choose between keeping her friendship with Darcy, which has never really been what true friendship is about, or following her heart and being with the one she loves.

I thought that this book was a real page turner! From the very beginning of the book Emily Giffin has you hooked. My heart literally ached for Rachel as she struggled with the fact that the only man she's ever truly loved was engaged to her best friend. I couldn't get to the end fast enough to find out how it all turned out!

Darcy has always had everything going for her: good looks, the popular girl at school, friends, and the interest of a never ending string of guys.  Darcy soon finds, however, that the actions of her past and her selfish ways have all come to a head and have some unsettling consequences. Now, for the first time in her life, she finds herself completely alone.

I loved this book as well! If you're anything like I was, you didn't really care too much for Darcy after reading Something Borrowed. But she really starts to grow on you in Something Blue and you're really wanting everything to work out good for her in the end.  The only thing I was a little disappointed with was that Darcy's friendship with Rachel wasn't restored. I thought that they were going to end up being best friends again in the end and maybe even better friends than they were before, but it didn't happen. I just felt like there were some loose strings between them, and the book didn't wrap them up as well as I would have liked.

Claudia is a girl that knows exactly what she wants, or rather, doesn't want. She has her mind made up that she DOES NOT want children EVER. This stance on children scared off men in the past until Claudia met Ben. Not wanting children was something that neither one of them desired. But when Claudia and Ben's closest friends find out that they're expecting, Ben starts to wonder if maybe he might want a kid after all. Claudia is faced with the difficult decision to either go against her wishes and have a child or to leave Ben behind.

Honestly, this book disappointed me a little bit. I assumed going into the book that the story line was going to follow Something Borrowed and Something Blue. However there are only two lines in the whole book that tie Baby Proof to the other two. You could actually read Baby Proof without reading Something Borrowed or Something Blue. The connection to the other two books is that insignificant. The ending let me down a bit as well. I found myself staring at the end of the book saying, "That's it?!" It just had a very predictable ending. I think that I just had really high expectations for this book after reading the first two, and it didn't really match up. But if you've read the first two I think it's worth reading the third.

So in summary, I think this series is definitely worth the read!

  1. You should read Emily Giffin's other two books as well, Love the One You're With, and Heart of the Matter. They're both good reads as well, and Heart of the Matter has a small tie to Something Borrowed. :)

  2. I loved Something Borrowed and I'm trying to read Something Blue now. i bought heart of the matter (her most recent one) and thought it was excellent!

if you like her, you should read some of Jodi Picoult's books if you haven't! She is my other favorite author.

  3. Emily Giffin is seriously one of my favorites! Hope you plan to read Love the One Your With and Heart of the Matter, too!

I love how she can make you see that everything is not black and white or necessarily good vs. bad. Life is so much more complicated than that.

I also love how there are small connections and references to the characters from early on throughout all her books (Dex and Rachel show up even if her most recent) so if you fall in love with Something Borrowed and how perfect they are for each other, you can see little glimpses of how their lives progress through her other books.

Seriously - I think Emily Giffin is my favorite author. So glad you posted this! :)

  5. I haven't started this series yet but I did see Something Borrowed and really liked it. It's on my list of stuff to read once I finish my Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. :)
